Fruit Salad Skin Care

As I stood in my kitchen, letting my avocado face mask dry, eating a nectarine and planning my makeup for the night, I began thinking about the latest trend in skincare: fruit.

In my daily skin care and makeup routine I currently use four fruit based products; the Glow Recipe Blueberry Bounce Cleanser, the Glow Recipe Pineapple C Glow Serum, one of their amazing masks and the Ciate London Watermelon Burst Hydrating Primer.

Gone are the days where I can’t say or understand the chemicals in my skin-care products, they’ve been replaced with pineapple juice, Ascorbic acid and antioxidants.

When did fruit salad skin care become popular?

The iconic skin-care brand, Glow Recipe, was born in 2014. In 2017, when they launched the Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser and the Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, they put fruity skin on the map.

Founders, Sarah and Christine, were inspired by K-Beauty, integrating key aspects of the Korean skin care trends and tips into their products. K-Beauty has becoming increasingly popular, with Korean makeup artists and YouTubers like Pony from PONY Syndrome stepping up into the limelight, sharing their best beauty tips. No longer is makeup about heavy foundation and highlighter, now beauty aficionados are focusing on clean, clear skin and a beautiful natural glow.

According to the article ‘What Is K-Beauty? Here’s Everything You Need To Knowby ELLE UK, “Korean women favour glowing ‘glass’ skin over layers of foundation, and a lengthy routine that focuses on clarifying, toning and layers of hydration allows them to achieve optimum luminosity.”

For this, fruit is the perfect choice. According to the article ‘Dermatologist Weighs In On The Real Benefits Of Using Fruit As Skincare’ when making DYI masks, fruits such as blueberries and blackberries are full of antioxidants that help “minimise the ageing of our skin and bodies.” It only makes sense that Glow Recipe has integrated blueberries into a cleanser because, as dermatologist Dr. Rachel Nazarian says, “Using blueberries and blackberries on the skin might not offer as much of a benefit as actually eating them, but they will offer some benefit by undoing daily ageing and damage.”

But does it actually work?

Glow Recipe’s Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser

Nominated for the Byrdie SkinCare Awards in 2019 for ‘Best Cleanser Gel/Foam’, it can be used as a cleanser, face mask and makeup remover. According to Glow Recipe, it “hydrates the skin without stripping it, helping to combat blemishes and breakouts over time.”

What Do I Think?

I’ve used this cleanser for over a month and it does exactly that. A tiny amount removes all of my makeup and leaves my skin feeling fresh and soft without that tight, tingly feeling some cleansers leave. I have sensitive skin and am prone to breakouts but I have found when using the Blueberry Bounce Cleanser my skin looks less inflamed and a bit brighter. It also smells super yummy!

What’s In It?

  • Blueberry Extract: helps fight free radicals to prevent premature ageing, naturally hydrate, calm inflammation, and minimise discoloration.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: it deeply moisturises and keeps skin supple.
  • AHA: Super gentle exfoliating acids that removes dead skin buildup.
  • Hydrating Suds: Microfoaming bubbles effectively remove makeup, dirt, and grime.

Glow Recipe’s Pineapple C Bright Serum

This product has recently been on the lips and faces of beauty lovers, coming in as the winner of the 2019 InStyle’s Readers’ Choice Beauty Awards for Best Serum. The Pineapple C Bright Serum is already a cult product, with over 1000 reviews on Glow Recipe’s website alone.

According to the brand, it gives the skin a ‘smooth, bright and translucent complexion,’ making the skin appear like glass. It also helps with dark spots, acne scars and hyper-pigmentation.

What Do I Think?

I’m addicted to this product. I use it everyday and it does make my skin look visibly brighter. My skin does not look like glass, but my complexion does look more translucent and any small scars I have on my face have faded. The serum does feel oily at first and the smell is odd, but after a week using it, you will see a difference. If you buy anything from Glow Recipe, add this one to your beauty bag.

What’s In It?

  • Pineapple: a source of natural vitamin C, natural AHA, and bromelain enzymes for bright, smooth, and hydrated skin. It visibly fades dark spots, acne scars, and hyper-pigmentation for smoother, clearer skin.
  • Ascorbic Acid: A form of vitamin C. It helps to brighten complexion and even out skin tone while helping to visibly reduce signs of premature ageing like fine lines and wrinkles.
  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid:  A vitamin C derivative. It helps to brighten and even skin tone while acting as a powerful antioxidant.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates and plumps skin by attracting water to maintain long-lasting hydration.
  • Vitamin E: Helps to deeply hydrate and visibly protect skin.

Watermelon and Avocado Sleeping Masks

What Do I Think?

I’ve only used the Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask and the Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask a few times so I have not seen significant results. However, I love the feeling of them on my skin.

Avocado is great for moisturising and my face feels fresh and soft after using it. The watermelon mask is great for hydrating, soothing, and fighting free radical damage to ward off fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. I loved using the Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturiser last year and I plan to incorporate the mask into my routine more.

The best part of Glow Recipe’s products is they are all free of Parabens, Mineral Oil, Sulfates, Silicones, Phthalates, Alcohol and Synthetic Dyes. They are also Vegan and cruelty-free!

Ciate London Watermelon Burst Primer

The cult British beauty brand Ciate London has also joined the fruit trend, releasing a watermelon based primer and a lip oil.

According to the brand, this serum-based primer hydrates the skin and keeps it feeling fresh while also preparing it for your makeup. It’s ingredients also help the skin feel plump and helps to refine pores.

What Do I Think?

The first time I used this primer, I fell in love. A small amount leaves my skin feeling hydrated and smelling amazing! I haven’t noticed if my makeup has lasted longer but it does add a subtle glow under your makeup. The primer is also Vegan!

What’s In It?

  • Watermelon Extract: Rich in fatty acids, it helps to hydrate whilst repairing the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
  • Hyaluronic acid: This helps to maintain the skin’s moisture levels to prevent dehydration.
  • Vitamin E: This is an antioxidant that soothes and hydrates skin.
